At SEED Engineers, our people are at the heart of every successful project. Their technical expertise, collaborative mindset, and commitment to quality help bring complex designs to life every day. In this feature, we get to know Gabriela, one of our Hydraulic Designers and Revit Modellers, and take a closer look at her day-to-day work.
Gabriela has over 4.5 years of experience in hydraulic engineering and more than a decade of experience as a Civil Engineer. Her work focuses on delivering practical, efficient, and well-coordinated hydraulic solutions across a range of commercial developments.
Her interest in engineering was driven by a desire to work in a field that combines technical thinking with real-world application. Over the years, this balance of problem-solving and practical impact has continued to shape her approach and passion for the profession.
Starting the Day with Purpose
Gabriela typically begins her workday between 8:00 and 8:30am, finishing around 5:00 to 5:30pm. Like many successful engineers, she values organisation and consistency, making a conscious effort to complete tasks at the end of each day so she can resume efficiently the next morning.
Her day usually starts by reviewing emails, checking priorities, and identifying any urgent matters that require immediate attention. This structured approach helps ensure projects remain on track and deadlines are met.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
No two days are exactly the same, but Gabriela’s schedule is usually a combination of hydraulic design development, reviewing and updating project drawings, Revit modelling and documentation, coordination with consultants and contractors, and resolving technical challenges as they arise.
Much of her time is spent working in Revit and AutoCAD, two essential tools that support accurate modelling, documentation, and collaboration across disciplines.
To stay productive, Gabriela prioritises tasks based on project deadlines and the stage of each development, allowing her to balance design work, coordination, and problem-solving effectively.
Working on Complex Commercial Projects
Gabriela is currently involved in several commercial developments that require close collaboration across multiple disciplines, including mechanical and electrical services.
This collaborative environment means working closely with architects, contractors, other engineers, and senior engineers who provide valuable technical guidance on more complex design matters.
One recent challenge involved coordinating hydraulic services within limited ceiling spaces, where multiple systems were competing for room. By working closely with the wider project team, layouts were adjusted and a practical solution was developed that satisfied both functional and design requirements.
This kind of coordination is a key part of engineering—finding solutions that work not only on paper, but in the real world.
The Most Rewarding Part of the Role
For Gabriela, one of the most satisfying parts of her work is seeing a project come together and knowing that the systems her team designs will be used every day.
From water supply to drainage and essential building services, hydraulic systems often work behind the scenes, yet they are critical to the successful operation of any building.
The Challenges Engineers Navigate
While engineering can be highly rewarding, it also comes with challenges. Gabriela notes that one of the most demanding aspects of her role is balancing design requirements with site constraints while coordinating across multiple disciplines—particularly on more complex projects.
It’s a reminder that engineering is far more than calculations. It requires communication, adaptability, sound judgement, and the ability to solve problems collaboratively.
Advice for Future Engineers
For students and young professionals considering a career in engineering, Gabriela offers simple but valuable advice:
“Don’t be afraid to ask questions and learn from others. Engineering is something you build over time, and practical experience is just as important as theory.”
Outside of Work
When the workday is done, Gabriela enjoys heading to the gym or staying active through exercise. She also loves spending time outdoors, especially at the beach or in nature.
She enjoys exploring different cuisines and has recently developed a strong appreciation for Korean food. When it comes to sport, she supports Flamengo, the well-known Brazilian football club.
Her favourite quote is one many engineers can relate to:
“Progress, not perfection.”
