For Mustafa, it was something more cumulative, a lifelong curiosity about the world being built around him, and a growing fascination with the systems that make it all work. In this edition of A Day in the Life of an Engineer at SEED Engineers, we introduce Mustafa, our Senior Electrical Engineer, whose 14 years of experience across Australia and the world bring a rare depth of perspective to every project he touches.
Meet Mustafa
Mustafa is a Senior Electrical Engineer at SEED Engineers, specialising in electrical building services across power distribution, lighting, emergency systems, and the coordination of electrical services across commercial, residential, hospitality, and industrial developments. He also brings a strong background in high-voltage and low-voltage power distribution design, as well as experience in the Oil and Gas sector.
Over a career spanning 14 years, Mustafa has worked across a broad range of projects not only in Australia, but also in Georgia, Türkiye, and Saudi Arabia, an international footprint that has shaped both his technical expertise and his approach to problem-solving.
From a young age, he was captivated by the way bridges, skyscrapers, roads, and electrical systems come together to form the built environment. Engineering, for Mustafa, offered the perfect intersection of technical knowledge and creativity — a way to design systems that have a tangible impact on the lives of the people who use them every day.
Starting the Day with a Plan
Mustafa typically begins his workday at 8:30am, finishing between 5:30 and 6:00pm, though project deadlines and site commitments can extend the day when needed.
His morning starts with a clear-eyed review of emails, project priorities, and his workload for the day ahead. Urgent client requests and coordination meetings are addressed first, ensuring that the most time-sensitive matters are never left waiting. It is a disciplined approach that keeps both his projects and his team moving efficiently from the outset.
What Does a Typical Day Look Like?
Mustafa’s role as a Senior Electrical Engineer means his days are as varied as the projects he works on. At any given time, he may be designing electrical systems, reviewing drawings, performing lighting calculations, coordinating with architects and other engineering disciplines, attending project meetings, or responding to client queries. He is also responsible for delegating daily tasks to the engineers and drafters within his team — a reflection of the leadership dimension that comes with a senior role.
His work is underpinned by a strong suite of tools, including AutoCAD, Bluebeam, Dialux, Powerpac, and Microsoft Office, alongside communication and project management platforms such as Teams, Aconex, Accelo, and Procore.
To manage the demands of design, coordination, and problem-solving, Mustafa plans his workload on a weekly basis, prioritising tasks around project deadlines while staying responsive to the unexpected technical challenges that are an inevitable part of complex projects. Good communication with the team, he notes, is what keeps everything moving.
Solving Problems Under Pressure
A recent challenge that stands out involved designing the electrical services for a restaurant where the available power supply fell short of what the client’s equipment requirements demanded. Rather than defaulting to costly infrastructure upgrades, Mustafa worked closely with the client, the mechanical engineer, and the energy authority to review the electrical loads and optimise the design — ultimately delivering a solution that met Australian Standards without placing an unnecessary financial burden on the project.
It is the kind of outcome that reflects what Mustafa values most in his work: finding solutions that balance technical rigour, client expectations, and real-world constraints.
The Most Rewarding Part of the Role
For Mustafa, the greatest satisfaction comes at the end — when a project that existed only in drawings and calculations becomes a completed, functioning building. Knowing that the systems his team designed are safe, efficient, and built to last is a reward that does not diminish, no matter how many projects he has delivered.
At the same time, he is candid about the challenges the role brings. Balancing technical requirements, client expectations, budgets, and deadlines simultaneously is demanding work — but it is also, as he sees it, a core part of what makes the profession worth doing.
Advice for the Next Generation
For students and young engineers considering a career in electrical engineering, Mustafa’s advice is straightforward: stay curious, never stop learning, and seek out practical experience wherever possible. He is also a firm believer in the value of research — the ability to find answers and think independently is, in his view, one of the most important skills an engineer can develop.
It is a perspective shaped by experience, and one that speaks to the kind of engineer Mustafa has become over 14 years in the field.
Outside of Work
Beyond the office, Mustafa lives by a simple but vivid philosophy: “Live a lifetime in a day.” It is a quote that reflects the way he approaches life outside of work — with a wide range of interests that keep him active, curious, and engaged.
He is a keen cyclist, hiker, and gym-goer, and runs with a local run club once a week. He enjoys travelling, photography, music, camping, and exploring new places — and makes a point of discovering new cafés and restaurants wherever he finds himself. When it comes to food, Turkish cuisine is his first love, though he has a strong appreciation for Thai and Japanese food as well.
