Behind every successful engineering consultancy is a strong foundation of people, systems, and culture. At SEED Engineers, that foundation is supported by our Business Manager, Kim Loan Tran, who plays a critical role in shaping how the business grows, operates, and supports its people.
From staff development and HR strategy to finance coordination and operational planning, Kim’s work ensures our engineers can focus on delivering high-quality outcomes for clients across Australia.
From HR Graduate to Business Manager
Kim graduated with Honours in Human Resource Management in 2011 and has spent over 13 years working across not-for-profit organisations and small-to-medium businesses. She joined SEED Engineers in 2020, during the early COVID period, when the firm was still small.
Since then, SEED has grown into a multi-state consultancy with teams across Queensland, New South Wales, and Western Australia. Watching that growth has been one of the most rewarding aspects of Kim’s role.
“I genuinely enjoy seeing a business grow, especially a small one. Being part of SEED’s journey from a small firm to where it is now has been incredibly fulfilling.”
Flexibility, Balance, and a Typical Day
One of the values Kim appreciates most about working at SEED Engineers is flexibility. Currently on part parental leave, her day often starts early, depending on her daughter’s schedule, with emails typically beginning around 6 or 7am.
Her mornings usually begin with coffee or matcha, reviewing urgent emails, and checking internal team updates to ensure staff are informed and supported. From there, her focus shifts to people-related tasks, finance queries, and operational priorities.
A typical day may include:
- Supporting staff with HR and development enquiries
- Working on staff development plans and policies
- Coordinating with SEED’s Directors, Office Manager, and Finance Officer
- Contributing to the rollout of SEED’s HR platform
Building People, Not Just Processes
At present, a significant portion of Kim’s time is dedicated to staff development plans. This involves one-on-one meetings with staff and managers, identifying individual goals, and connecting team members with training and resources to support both short- and long-term career progression.
“When staff achieve qualifications or complete training they set as goals, those wins feel just as important as project milestones.”
Kim works daily across platforms such as Outlook, Microsoft Teams, SharePoint, and SEED’s developing HR systems to ensure information, communication, and support remain consistent across the business.
What Makes the Role Rewarding
For Kim, the most rewarding moments often come from seeing the collective success of the team. Whether it’s SEED winning multi-discipline projects, staff progressing professionally, or visiting completed projects such as restaurants in Brisbane and Sydney, those outcomes reinforce the impact of behind-the-scenes work.
She also finds it particularly interesting when SEED engineers solve complex client challenges, including projects involving advanced tools such as CFD modelling.
“These are the moments where you really see how engineering expertise translates into real-world value for clients.”
Challenges and Lessons Learned
One of the more challenging aspects of Kim’s role is resourcing and recruitment. As SEED has grown, selecting people with both the right technical skills and cultural fit has become increasingly important.
“Collaboration is essential at SEED, especially on multi-discipline projects. Having the right people makes all the difference.”
Advice for Students and Young Professionals
Kim encourages students and early-career professionals to consider business as a flexible and valuable foundation.
“A business background can be applied across almost any industry. If you’re unsure where to specialise, it opens many pathways.”
She also believes the value of engineering work is often underestimated.
“Engineering is the backbone of projects. Good engineering reduces risk, prevents costly issues, and ultimately saves clients significant time and money.”
Life Outside Work
Outside the office, Kim enjoys spending time with her daughter, going for afternoon walks to reset after work, and staying active through tennis and yoga. She also enjoys cooking and exploring Vietnamese, Italian, and Japanese cuisine.
Her favourite sayings reflect both perspective and productivity:
- “This too shall pass.”
- “It has been good, not perfect.”
Together, they capture the balance of resilience and pragmatism that underpins her approach to both work and life.
